Make An Impact That Matters

Imagine … that young Kenyans, with few chances in life, are supported to build their own future: peaceful, independent, self-supportive and sustainable.

Imagine … that they are empowered to remain in school, and end the cycles of violence and poverty that are commonplace in the Rusinga region.

Our Mission

Education For All

End school dropouts due to poverty and pregnancy. A surrounding community that benefits from social change.

Sustainable Future

This school model will promote sustainable peace and social change for the students. This kind of learning environment will be unique in Kenya.

Safe Space

Put an end to punishment and (sexual) abuse. Offer a safe and peaceful learning community for children, young women, and young professionals.

Our Vision

To create a safe space of nonviolence and collaboration where young ones learn skills of sharing resources fairly and adequately.

We believe that nonviolent communication (NVC) will make it happen. Sharing resources, upholding human rights, fostering respect, shielding young ones from violence, and resolving conflicts via dialogues are just a few of the many areas that will benefit from the application of its resonant principles.

Why NVC School

“When I made mistakes in maths I got punished. And I noticed I got punished differently than others, more severely. This was the limit. I left.”

— Erick, a Kenyan teenager dropped out of school due to punishments.

LOCAL REALITY
A classroom with benches, chairs and a board

Teaching methods are often outdated and not suited to the young ones in Kenya; violent teaching methods are commonplace in many schools. Poor supervision due to the lack of teachers leads to a high school dropout rate, and in 2020, the situation worsened due to Covid 19.

From all those experiences of violence, punishment, and poverty, there are limited opportunities for a good education in Kenya. Social change is required to address this situation.

The School

The NVC School Rusinga is for students aged 11 to 18 years old. It will offer multiple learning environments. Of course, the students will learn the regular secondary school curriculum subjects. However, more importantly, they will be introduced to the Nonviolent Communication modality of learning to communicate and cooperate in a way that respects equality and connection.

The Building

The school will be built mainly by local people in cooperation with architects and constructors experienced in sustainable building. Building the school this way stimulates local self-supportiveness at relatively low costs. Local materials and resources are used as much as possible.

Where goes the money?

We have raised and will raise money for different purposes. We have purchased the land, prepared for water supply and installed toilets, and started the training of the teachers. Now the money will be needed to realize the building. When the building is ready, we will move to buy the school materials and so forth. Once the school is up and running the donations will be used to welcome students that can’t pay the school fee.
