The initiative for the NVC School Rusinga comes from within the international community of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) practitioners. They are all from different backgrounds, tribes, and cultures, both in Kenya and abroad. Communicating and cooperating in the NVC way enhances peace, empowerment, understanding, and equality. The initiators believe that when education is based on these values, it will stimulate social change and empowerment for all. The local team in Rusinga is in the driver’s seat. The national Kenyan and global teams are supporting the local team with whatever skills or knowledge they can contribute.
Our Board and School Circles
The Community Based Organisation (CBO) “Nonviolence Communication Rusinga Community” is the legal entity behind this initiative.
We use sociocracy in how we organize our collaboration. It supports us in working with distributed decision-making and accountability. We have also found that working in circles supports us to be creative and build on everyone’s wisdom. The following forms the board of the CBO and the coordinating circle that directly supports the CBO.

Non-violent Communication
In Nonviolent Communication (NVC), everyone matters. Communicating this way means trying to include everyone’s needs. Doing so offers an alternative way of communicating to the regular communication in Kenyan schools, which is often based on punishment and power (over) structures. NVC offers an awareness that respects feelings and needs and aims for ‘power with’ relationships. More concretely, this means that students are safe, have a choice, and are interdependent: this is how they can build their future.
